Nothing Has Changed

Today, I got my groceries delivered to my doorstep. Like every other day I had my three meals and went to work and came back and took my medications.

Today was the same as yesterday and the day before and will most likely be the same as tomorrow.

Today, for someone who lives a couple blocks down the road from me has finally gotten their first full meal since 14 years.

Today, I heard my neighbor cheering with joy. Apparently their missing sibling has finally showed up.

Today, the kid I was used to seeing sell paper tissues in the streets was wearing his school uniform and headed to attend first grade level of education even though they’re 13 years old.

See, for me, nothing has changed because I had connections with the people in power of my country, so nothing really has changed. I don’t see why people are getting so excited about the new Syrian government because I already had the privilege of living a “normal” life. Nothing changing or having a boring life is sometimes is an actual blessing that a lot of others wish for.

Of course, all what is mentioned above is made of my imagination, but that doesn’t mean nonetheless it’s not real. I grew up in a private school where most of my friends were kids of politicians or had connection with the Assad dictatorship. It is very frustrating on my end how dismissive they are of all the suffering others have gone through and complain about how nothing has changed. If only they knew, how much privilege they had and how much suppression there was. Maybe they knew but turned a blind wye because it really didn’t affect them.

This post is really just a vent about those people who fully supported the regime yet they roam free because they are indirectly involved. I’m not saying that they should go to prison, but I’m just pointing out how messed up their mentality can be and negative they are by dismissing what others are happy about when it comes to basic needs. At least, they should respect the suffering that has been met and just how they were quiet about the suppression, they should be quiet about the change.
